The festival is celebrated every year on the fifth day of the waxing moon of the Nepali month of Magh. Children are taught to write and read on this day. While students visit Saraswati temples, parents take their children to Swoyambhunath where they write first letters on the wall, marking the start of their learning.
The festival is also observed to mark the advent of Basanta Ritu, the spring season.
Meanwhile, President Bidya Devi Bhandari attended the Basanta Shrawan ritual at Hanumandhoka Durbar Square precincts on to observe the day. On the occasion, the President listened to a special melody, Basanta, at the auspicious hour and received tika and prasad.
Vice President Nanda Bahadur Pun, Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal, members of the Cabinet, heads of constitutional bodies, high-ranking government officials and chiefs of the security bodies were also present.
