The Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) says it is planning to construct the automated lift parking facility on its own land spread over 1.12 ropanis (890 square metres) in Dharmapath where the KMC had its old office before it was demolished.
KMC officials believe once completed, this facility could help address New Road’s traffic woes.
According to the KMC, the five-storey steel structure will be built at the cost of around Rs 150 million.
The parking facility will be constructed under public private partnership (PPP) model under which the operating company will manage the property for a period of 30 years, said KMC Spokesperson Gyanendra Karki. The metropolis has already hired consultants to design the model. Bidding will be called within a month, said the KMC.
“The significance of such parking facility is optimal utilisation of limited free spaces,” said Karki.
New Road is one of the busiest business centres and every day it sees a hug traffic pressure with over 300 four-wheelers and 700 motorcycles crammed in and around the market area.
Besides this parking facility plan, the KMC is also planning to build underground parking areas in Khula Manch and Lainchaur.
