Koirala, who is also an ophthalmologist, was rushed to the hospital in Chabahil on Tuesday night after he complained of abdominal discomfort and shortness of breath. He was immediately moved to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
In a health bulletin released at 7pm on Wednesday, Om Hospital said that Koirala suffered “multiple organ dysfunction” primarily due to aspiration pneumonia, a condition caused when food and other substances are inhaled. Koirala has been put under mechanical ventilation and other life support system and is under the care of a team of 15 doctors led by Dr Laba Narsingh Joshi.
The hospital has also called in Dr Arjun Karki, chairman of Critical Care Medicine with Grande International Hospital; Dr Bhagwan Koirala, cardiologist at TU Teaching Hospital (TUTH) and Dr Subash Acharya, ICU unit chief of TUTH.
Koirala had inhaled food particles as he vomited in the hospital on Wednesday morning at around 5:30, following which his condition started deteriorating, according to the hospital.
The hospital has not provided details of overnight treatment that was administered to Koirala.
“Currently we are using four drugs to normalise his blood pressure,” said a doctor involved in the treatment.
On the possibility of taking Koirala abroad for treatment, the doctor said, “A slight fluctuation could be life-threatening. We cannot take the risk of sending him abroad at this moment.”
“It all depends on how well his body responds to the drugs,” said another doctor.
Oli, Deuba reach hospital
KATHMANDU: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba and other leaders of various political parties on Wednesday reached Om Hospital to enquire about NC General Secretary Shshank Koirala’s health. PM Oli urged the doctors to leave no stone unturned during Koirala’s treatment. NC President Deuba had proposed that Koirala be flown to New Delhi on an air ambulance. But doctors said Koirala’s health condition was not stable enough to fly him to India. Congress leaders in huge numbers and other well-wishers visited the hospital the whole day on Wednesday to enquire about Koirala. (PR)
