The Naya Shakti campaign led by former prime minister Baburam Bhattarai on Sunday issued broad policy principles that would guide party’s policy development.

The first principle revolves around protection and promotion of Swadhinta (independence), sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Naya Shakti has also annouced that it would formulate timely national security and foreign policy, maintaining cordial relations with India and China as part of its second broad policy committment. The new political party has suggested steps to decrease dependence through national unity, economic prosperity and economic prosperity in what it called a ‘progressive nationalism’.

The second commitment of party is to work for equitable prosperity of the country and transform the country. “We want to end the poverty and unemployment within next two years and transform country into a development country,” the document issued by party states.

The third one concerns about inclusive, proportional and participatory democracy, which the party aims to adopt by ending the current ‘formal and ritual’ democracy.

“We are committed to ensure the proportional and inclusive representation of Himal, Pahad, and Tarai/Madhes in the sated mechanisms,” the document says.

Calling for a change in the existing electoral system of the country, the Bhattarai-led force has proposed a directly-elected presidential system as form of government.

Good governance is another of Naya Shakti’s commitment, which leaders of the force say, makes it stand out from other ‘traditional parties’.

“It seems that corruption and politics are complementary to each other now. Recent surveys have shown that political parties and leaders are most corrupt. So, Naya Shakti would make efforts to maintain transparency and corruption-free society and politics,” said Bhattarai.

The party has also made a pitch for advanced socialism, which the party says it necessary given that the Nepali society has entered into capitalism from authoritarian and unitary state.

The Naya Shakti has said that problems facing the country, particularly in the Tarai,  should be resolved without any delay.
