Plan to up water treatment efficacy
The Kathmandu Valley’s only fully operational wastewater treatment plant is likely to be fed with continuous power supply for 24-hours, thus contributing to treat additional effluents
At present, the treatment plant located at Guheshwori is running only for 12-hour on power supplied by the Nepal Electricity Authority.
Recently the NEA published a call for interested tenders to supply 24-hours power to the wastewater plant with the aim to operate the plant continuously and treat wastewater as much as possible.
According to Gajendra Thankur, chief of the Wastewater Treatment Plant, continuous power supply will improve the efficiency of the plant by operating for longer periods. Though, the capacity of the plant is 16.3 MLD, the current wastewater supplied through drainage is 2.5 times more than the capacity. It is estimated that almost 90 percent of the waste water coming out from households and other commercial areas is left untreated and dumped directly into rivers and streams inside the Valley.
