Bagmati provincial boxing event to start on March 3
The event will feature six weight categories in women's and eight categories in men's sections.Sports Bureau
Nagarjun Boxing Sports Committee is set to organise Bir Ganesh Man Singh Memorial Bagmati Province Boxing Championships from March 3 to 6 in Nagarjun, Kathmandu.
The event will feature six weight categories in women's and eight categories in men's sections, according to Mohan Bahadur Basnet, the mayor of Nagarjun Municipality and coordinator of the main organising committee, at a press conference on Friday.
The women's event will feature 48kg, 51kg, 54kg, 57kg, 60kg and 64 kg weight categories while the men's event will have 49kg, 52kg, 56k, 60kg, 64kg, 69kg, 75kg and above 81kg weight categories. Mayor Basnet said they expect the participation of boxers from all 13 districts of the province.
The winners of each weight category will get a purse of Rs 10,000 while the runner up and two semi-finalists will walk away with Rs 7,000 and Rs 4,000 apiece. Mayor Basnet announced the plan to reward the best female boxer of the championships with a two wheeler paid for with his own money. Meanwhile, the organiser will honour the best male boxer with a motorbike.
The estimated cost of the four-day event is Rs 3 million—of which the municipality will provide Rs 2 million. Meanwhile, the organisers have also announced to honour the medalists of the 13th South Asian Games at the event. The championship is being organised in the memory of the 1990 democratic movement leader Ganesh Man Singh.
