New Road Team advanced into the quarter-finals of the Jhapa Gold Cup football tournament with a scrappy 2-1 win over Nepal Police Club (NPC) on Sunday.

Raj Paudel scored the decisive goal in the extra time after Ashok Thapa Magar had levelled the scores for NRT in the injury time. Bikram Dhimal had given the departmental team the 31st minute lead.

Dhimal was in hand to slot home from a Sudip Rai’s corner kick and although the Police team appeared to have held on to their lead until the end, Thapa Magar struck an equaliser in the dying moments of the game. The match went to 20 minutes of extra time and it was NRT again who scored the winning goal14 minutes into the extra time. Paudel was in right place to pounce on a pass from Thapa Magar to score the winning goal.

Himalayan Sherpa Club will take on Nepal APF Club on Monday.
