Tamang, Dhami enter semis
Top seeds Ratnajit Tamang, Sajan Krishna Tamrakar, Dipesh Dhami and Bikash Shrestha advanced to men’s singles semi-finals of the 11th Krishna Mohan Memorial Open Badminton Championships.
Defending champion Tamang of Tribhuvan Army Club (TAC) eased to a 21-10, 21-1 win over Sudeep Sedhai of Nepal Armed Police Force (APF) Club while Dipesh Dhami laboured to a 21-17, 25-27, 21-13 win over Nabin Shrestha in an all-TAC clash. APF’s Tamrakar beat Bishnu Katwal of Nepal Police Club (NPC) 21-18, 21-12 and Shrestha of TAC sidelined Bijit Thapa Magar 24-22, 21-10 in other men’s singles quarter-finals.
TAC dominated the women’s singles after holder Sara Devi Tamang, her sister Nangsal and Amita Giri confirming their places in the last four. Sara defeated clubmate Jessica Gurung 21-14, 21-10, Nangshal made light work of Shova Gauchan of NPC 21-12-21-13 and Giri cruised past Sunaina Mukhiya 21-11, 21-16. Sikshya Shrestha of APF will be a non-TAC player in the semis after her opponent Nary Thapa of Banke retired hurt.
In the U-17 boys’ singles, Nir Vikram Devkota of APF beat Abhishek Gurung of Sindhupalchowk 21-17, 16-21, 21-17. Riyaz Ansari of Banke downed Bishal Tamang of TAC 21-17, 21-17, Gautam Kathayat of Kailali nailed Prince Dahal of Nepal Police School 21-10, 21-13 and TAC’s Nabin Shrestha edged clubmate Anish Shrestha 13-21, 21-18, 21-17 to quarter-finals.
TAC stole the show in the U-17 women’s singles with Megha Chand, Sunaina Mukhiya and Jessica Gurung making it to the semi-finals. Ranjana Bhatta of Kanchanpur, who ousted Rashila Maharjan of TAC 23-21, 21-9, is the other semi-finalist. TAC top guns also progressed to the men’s doubles semi-finals. Dhami and Suraj Maharjan of TAC knocked out Ramesh Sherpa and Mahendra Dhakal of APF 21-12, 21-6, while Bikash and Nabin beat Katwal and Thapa Magar 21-12, 17-12, 21-10.
Tamang combined with Ram Rai to beat Tamrakar and Sedhai of APF 21-23, 21-17, 21-18. Bishal Pradhan and Bimal Shrestha of APF beat Kaski pair of Bishal Khadka and Sambhu Shrestha 21-16, 16-21, 21-19 in quarter-finals.
