A man died in an elephant attack on Saturday in Kamalamai Municipality-13 of Sindhuli district.
According to the police, 40-year-old Dandapani Paudel was attacked by a wild elephant while he was asleep early on Saturday. The pachyderm allegedly tore down Paudel’s home before attacking him.
Paudel was a daily wager, working as a street sweeper in the Madan Bhandari Highway.
Agitated locals have obstructed traffic in the Ranibas section of the highway demanding that the wild animal be taken into control.
The locals have demanded that the wild elephant be immediately transferred to an area within the park to prevent further loss of life and property, local Pujan Wakhrel said.
“Proper compensation should be paid to the victim’s family.”
The locals have refused to collect the body of the deceased from the Sindhuli Hospital until the elephants are managed and safety is guaranteed, Wakhrel added.
The obstruction has caused problems for the vehicles plying through Dharanchatra-Sindhuli to Hetauda.
The police are in talks with the locals to resolve the issues at the earliest, informed Superintendent of Police Rajkumar Silwal.
According to Silwal, the police officials are also coordinating with the forest office since the main demand of the locals is that the elephants be relocated.
