An attack attempt was made on Chandra Angbo, the province assembly parliamentary party leader of the CPN (Maoist Centre) on Tuesday.
Angbo, the former provincial finance minister, was travelling from Phidim to Phungling in Taplejung when an unidentified group pelted stones at the vehicle. The incident caused damage to Angbo’s vehicle, shattering a window.
“The incident took place some 8km from Phungling,” said Chief District Officer Goma Devi Chemjong. “The perpetrator attacked the vehicle from a distance of 500 metres.”
Angbo escaped the attack unharmed and a search for the culprit is underway, Chemjong added.
Nobody has taken the responsibility for the attack as of yet.
The Joint Struggle Committee has denied its connection to the attack, adding that they were unaware of the incident.
According to committee member Nabin Pomu, they had planned to show black flags, as a sign of protest, but backed out due to police presence.
“We do not know who the perpetrator is, but we what we do know is everyone, known or unknown, is involved in our struggle movement,” Pomu said.
According to District Coordinator Bishnu Hangwang Biru, Angbo and CPN (Maoist Centre) province coordinator Harka Nembang Mikso had reached Taplejung to attend a party meeting and the inauguration of the organization strengthening and worker mobilization program.
