Victims of loan sharking in Ghorahi have staged a protest outside the Dang District Court, demanding justice against the exploitation they face from the moneylenders. The demonstrators accused lenders of charging exorbitant interest rates, using fraudulent promissory notes, and exploiting legal loopholes to harass borrowers.
The protesters, organised under the Loan Shark Victims Farmers and Workers Movement, marched through the market with banners and slogans before converging into a gathering on the court premises. They submitted a memorandum to court officials, urging immediate action to stop the misuse of legal systems against debtors.
“The lenders use fake promissory notes and blank checks to file cases against borrowers, pushing them into legal and financial ruin,” said Dhruba Sherpaili, the district coordinator of the movement. “Courts have often ruled in favour of the lenders, leaving victims with no choice but to take to the streets.”
The protesters sat on the road outside the court, chanting slogans and blocking movement to and from the court.
Receiving the memorandum, Damodar Ghimire, the court registrar, assured the victims that the judiciary would uphold the principles of justice and address any issues that arise.
