A 45-year-old man surrendered to Makwanpur police on Saturday after strangling his chronically ill wife at her parental home in Makwanpurgadhi Rural Municipality-5.
The deceased has been identified as 40-year-old Durgalaxmi Shivabhakti, who had been paralysed for two years. Her husband, Man Bahadur Shivabhakti, turned himself in at the Hetauda District Police Office shortly after committing the crime at around dawn.
The victim had been living with her two sons at her parents’ home since becoming bedridden. The accused claimed that he acted under “prolonged stress” about her incurable condition.
Local witness Shyamlal Thing reported that Man Bahadur also attempted a suicide by hanging but survived as the rope snapped.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Rajan Adhikari of Makwanpur district police confirmed the news.
“During interrogation, the husband stated his wife’s untreatable condition caused constant distress, leading to the extreme act,” the police said.
The body has been sent for postmortem while authorities prepare to file murder charges.
