Nepali workers going abroad in search of greener pastures have declined sharply in the last five months.

According to a report of Nepal Rastra Bank, 92,931 Nepalis had left the country for foreign jobs in the last five months. The number is 40 percent less compared to the same period last year.

It has been learnt that the number of outgoing labours plummeted after the government imposed ban on Malaysia-bound workers. Malaysia is the biggest labour-receiving country for Nepali workers.

Around 49,057 workers had left for Malaysia last year against only 2,005 workers this year.

The government had barred Nepali workers from going to Malaysia saying that the aspiring labourers were charged exorbitant fee.

Though Labour Minister Gokarna Bista and his Malaysian counterpart had signed a labour agreement in October last year, the agreement is yet to be implemented.

The outbound labour migration has not only declined to Malaysia but also to all other labour destinations.

In spite of drop-off in the outbound labourers, the remittance inflow has seen an increment in the past five months.

According to Nepal Rastra Bank, the remittance has increased by 32 percent to Rs 3.76 billion.

It has been learnt that around two million Nepalis are working abroad.
