While Morcha supporters allege that he died due to beating by the police, the local administration claimed that he was the victim of chronic asthma. Bhat was injured in the clash that erupted after supporters of the Madhes-based parties tried to obstruct the UML’s campaign. More than 12 SLMM cadres were injured after police lobbed tear gas shells.
Bhat was admitted to Nepalgunj Teaching Hospital. Doctors said he had returned home after treatment on the same day. Morcha leader Pashupati Dayal Mishra said police personnel who were chasing protesters had thrashed Bhat at his house.
“According to the hospital report, he died of asthma, not due to physical injuries,” said CDO Rabilal Pantha.
