NVC close to setting up lab to test construction materials

The National Vigilance Centre is preparing to set up a laboratory inside the Singha Durbar to test construction materials used in infrastructure projects for technical audit.
The anti-graft body under the Prime Minister’s Office has been conducting technical audits of various infrastructure projects to check their durability.
In the last fiscal year, it conducted technical audits of three dozen development projects including 12 National Pride Projects. Based on the audit, the NVC provides suggestions to improve their quality.
Pramila Devi Shakya Bajracharya, joint-secretary at the NVC, said construction materials such as cement, sand, iron and steel, stone, bitumen, concrete and blacktop of roads are tested for quality at the lab.
Although the Department of Roads has its own lab to test the quality of road works, the lab under the NVC will be used to check the quality of various infrastructure projects. The NVC got delivery of the lab equipment a year ago. But installation has been delayed due to the lack of space with the Singha Durbar Reconstruction Office failing to construct the NVC building on time.
“The Reconstruction Office has informed us that space is now ready at the basement of the new NVC building on the Singha Durbar premises,” said Bishnu Raj Lamichhane, spokesperson for the NVC.
Enkay Enterprises, a New-Delhi based supplier, will install the equipment.
