Locals use boats to rescue flood victims
In an act of bravery, an expert rower has been going around in his boat in search of people trapped by the recent floods and landslides.Moti Lal Poudel
Somendra Raji, who rows for a living, started his rescue mission three days after the floods. The recent floods had knocked down the suspension bridge spanning 175 metres over Bheri river, depriving locals of daily essentials.
Raji apparently decided to rescue the flood victims while putting his own life at risk following the collapse of the bridge. Inspired by his spirit, eight youths have also followed Raji in the rescue mission.
According to Raji, the two boats they own, however, can only rescue two people at a time. A motor boat has also been put to use in an attempt to search the victims in Ranighat.
Following the destruction of the bridge at Jamu, Tatopani VDC is cut-off from other parts of the village. The group of volunteers including Raji also ferried the relief materials from Babiachaur to the VDC sent to by the government. Furthermore, the group is also responsible for providing travel facilities to the residents of Tatopani VDC.
Similarly, floods have destroyed four bridges over Bheri river. While one has been damaged beyond repair, it is estimated that repair work would cost around a total of Rs 54.6 million for the rest.
Acting Local Development Officer Rajendra KC, however, claimed that the damage was estimated at Rs 44.6
million. KC assured that their first priority was to repair and reconstruct the bridges. He said that if the government provided necessary funds on time along with
the technicians, they could complete the work by two months.
