Finance Minister Barshaman Pun presents budget, Congress lifts obstruction

Finance Minister Barshaman Pun has started presenting the budget for the upcoming fiscal year 2024-25 at the joint session of the Parliament on Tuesday.
Unveiling the budget the finance minister said that economic indicators have started improving. He said the third investment summit has been successful in attracting foreign investment and boosting the morale of the private sector.
The Nepali Congress, which has been obstructing the Parliament since March 15, has lifted the obstruction following an agreement on the ToR of a parliamentary committee to investigate cooperative fraud.
For the last two months, the Congress had been obstructing Parliament, demanding a parliamentary committee to investigate Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Home Affairs Rabi Lamichhane over his alleged involvement in the embezzlement of cooperative funds.
The winter session of Parliament was prorogued on April 14 amid the Congress’ obstruction. The party gave continuity to its obstruction right from the day the budget session commenced on May 10.
The government has a constitutional obligation to present the fiscal budget to a joint meeting of the House and the National Assembly on Jestha 15 [May 28 this year].
Earlier today, a meeting of the Council of Ministers endorsed the new fiscal budget.
