Nanglo closes down flagship restaurant
Nanglo closed down its flagship restaurant on Durbar Marg on Sunday explaining that its lease had expiredSuman Bashyal
“We had been operating from the rented premises for the past 38 years. The landlord has refused to renew the lease, so we have been forced to shut the restaurant from today,” said Naina Tara Gurung Kakshapati, director of Nanglo. “The employees have been asked to go home with whatever benefits they get for serving at Nanglo.”
Nanglo is considered to be a trend setter in the restaurant culture in Nepal and a household name for restaurant goers in Kathmandu.
The company operates a chain of restaurants in Kathmandu and elsewhere in Nepal. It opened its first restaurant on Durbar Marg.
Established in 1976, Nanglo provides a wide variety of food items from its outlets at Bouddha, Bhat Bhateni, Dharahara, Jawalakhel, Maharajgunj, New Baneshwor, Pulchok, Teendhara and Teku under the name of The Bakery Café. Nanglo recently expanded its services to New Road under the name of Nanglo Express.
The Nanglo group of restaurants is owned by two brothers, Shyam Sundar Lal Kakshapati and Gopal Sundar Lal Kakshapati. Some of the staff at the restaurant said that family dispute could also be a reason behind the closure. “The landlord is close to founder Shyam Kakshapati, and I don’t think the lease issue is the only reason behind the termination,” an employee said.
Restaurant workers said that the sudden closure had left them nowhere to go. They said that they could not make any plans for their future due to the abrupt notification.
