Actor Madan Krishna Shrestha undergoes brain surgery for Parkinson’s
Actor Madan Krishna Shrestha, who has been suffering from Parkinson’s disease for the past 9 years, has undergone Deep Brain Simulation (DBS) surgery at a hospital in Kathmandu.Actor Madan Krishna Shrestha, who has been suffering from Parkinson’s disease for the past 9 years, has undergone Deep Brain Simulation (DBS) surgery at a hospital in Kathmandu.
Neuro surgeons at Maitighar-based Annapurna Neurological Institute and Allied Sciences performed the surgery in the globus pallidus area of Shrestha’sright brain and placed a pacemaker.This is Shrestha’s second DBS surgery.
Four years ago, Shrestha had undergone the same procedure on the left side of his brain following the increase in symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. Shrestha was the first person in Nepal to undergo DBS surgery and many others have undergone the procedure after him, said Neuro surgeon Prof Dr BasantaPanta.
Saying that Shrestha’s health is gradually improving Dr Panta said, “We are performing the DBS surgery not only for patients suffering from Parkinson’s but the procedure is being done for other ailments including patients suffering from mental disorder, drug addiction, Treatment-Resistant Depression, Obsessive Compulsive Disorders among others.”
