The fourth general convention of Tarun Dal, the youth wing of the Nepali congress, approaches its conclusion with Jit Jung Basnet poised to lead the party wing.
The officer bearer positions of chairperson, vice-chairperson, general secretary and treasurer will be divided among four camps. Most likely, the panel close to the NC establishment will hold the chair, the Ram Chandra Poudel-led camp will have the general secretary, the Krishna Prasad Sitaula group will be given the vice-chair while a supporter of NC leader Khum Bahadur Khadka will be appointed the treasurer.
Senior party leaders said Basnet is confirmed to take charge of the outfit. Basnet, who was a contender for the Nepal Students’ Union chair, appeared cheerful as he greeted well-wishers and cadres in Pokhara on Tuesday. Despite a section of delegates remaining visibly upset at the imminent election of Basnet, who is relatively new to Tarun Dal, some consider him as the right candidate.
“His patience and sacrifice for our student wing has been rewarded,’’ said Bikash Basnet, a convention representative from Kathmandu-10. He added that the NC leadership wanted to show a united face through a unanimous selection of the Tarun Dal leadership, at a time when the local elections loom. But leaders are yet to reach an agreement on the organisation’s statute. Monday’s tentative agreement to add some office bearers and increase the central committee’s size from 61 has not been followed up on.
