Machhindra clinch KP Oli Cup title
The reigning A-Division League champions defeat Satdobato Youth Club 5-3 on penalties in the final.Sports Bureau
Machhindra FC won KP Oli Cup title on Wednesday after defeating Satdobato Youth Club 5-3 on penalties.
Machhindra goalkeeper Bishal Shrestha was the hero of the final as he saved the third penalty from Abdul Latif Abubakari to give his side something to cheer for, a day after losing the Jhapa Gold Cup title to Tribhuvan Army Club 4-3 on tie breaker.
Army had lost to Satdobato 5-6 on penalties in the KP Oli Cup semi-finals.
Ranjit Dhimal, Diwakar Chaudhary, Sujal Shrestha, Pujan Uperkoti and Omolajan Kareem all found the net during the shootout for the reigning A-Division champions Machhindra.
Niraj Chaudhary, Dipen Rajsing and Ekraj Budhathoki scored for Satdobato.
The match was pushed to the shootout after the regular 90 minutes ended in a 1-1 draw, with both the goals coming in an intense first half at the Dasharath Stadium.
Nigerian forward Olawale Afeez put Machhindra in front in the fifth minute when he slipped behind Satdobato defenders to run into a long pass from Devendra Tamang, before heading home.
But Jordan Owana equalised in the 18th minute heading past goalie Shrestha, after a good work from Sudip Gurung.
Winners Machhindra bagged a purse of Rs1 million while runners-up Satdobato took home Rs500,000.
Machhindra’s Tamang won the best player award. He received Rs100,000. Machhindra’s Shrestha was adjudged best goalkeeper and Satdobato’s Niraj Chaudhary was named the emerging player.
Shrestha and Chaudhary won Rs50,000 each.
Apart from Machhindra, Satdobato and Army, Nepal Police Club, Church Boys United, Jawalakhel Youth Club, New Road Team and hosts KP FC had participated in the event.
Machhindra will now turn their attention to defending the crown of the Martyrs Memorial A-Division League, which is set to begin on Friday.
