The sixth edition of the National Music Awards, a prominent event in the country’s music scene, was announced at a press meet held at the Radisson Hotel, Lazimpat. Radio Kantipur is organising the event, which will take place on Friday, June 14th.
Shishir Pachhai, group chief of staff of Kantipur Media Group and CEO of Radio Kantipur Team, shared that the program, previously held on the radio's anniversary, has evolved into a separate award ceremony over the last five editions.
The awards will honour song composers, producers and artists across 13 different categories. Additionally, a ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’, accompanied by a cash prize of Rs1,00,000 will be presented to an individual who has made significant contributions to Nepali music.
Other categories include Best New Singer, Best Lyricist, Best Music Director, and various distinctions for male and female singers in different genres, from ‘lok’ and ‘adhunik’ to pop. For the People’s Choice Award, the audience can vote through eSewa.
The top five nominees in each category were announced in the press meet as well. The nominees were selected by the first jury team from hundreds of songs aired between June 2022 and July 2023. Another jury team will determine the winners from these nominees for the finals.
Sujan Karki, chief marketing officer of Kantipur Television, said, “The music award is a celebration of the music fraternity and we aim to create a platform for acknowledgement and appreciation of all genres of music.”
Pachhai, highlighting the inclusive nature of the awards, added, “The award not only recognises newcomers but also pays tribute to veterans with categories like the Lifetime Achievement Award”.
The award ceremony will feature a special performance by Pawandeep Rajan, winner of Indian Idol Season 12, along with his team. Various well-known Nepali singers will also perform at the event.
