An art exhibition, Urban Reflections, is going to be held in the Capital on Friday. The art exhibit organised by ArtLab will feature 10 artists and their canvas reflections of various murals, graffiti, and street arts that initially adorned the urban walls during the two-year-long The Prasad Project, which concluded in 2016. 

The Prasad Project is a community that brings together an ensemble of art, poetry, and music ‘to create movement and change’. From 2014 to 2016, ArtLab with Project Prasad promoted street art in various cities of the country—Birjung, Pokhara, Beni, Dharan, Tansen and Kathmandu. In the two years, 10 street artists travelled across the six cities partaking in various workshops and exhibitions. 

Speaking to the Post about the exhibit, artist Kiran Maharjan says, “We completed Prasad project about eight months ago. Now we want to exhibit and capture the essence of the cities in canvas. We are featuring the canvas version of some of the murals that we created during that period. Most of these reflections are artistic representations of everyday society. We have paintings depicting issues such as youth empowerment, migration and more.” 

Of late, the street art scene has been flourishing in the Valley. According to Maharjan, over the course of last seven years, the appreciators of the genre of art have increased in number. People have been able to resonate with the murals. However, he added, “There are still many people who don’t understand the value it adds both socially and aesthetically. Many people oppose street art and many ask for compensation when we need to use their space. 

The art exhibit will take place at Friends Resturant in Thamel from 6pm onwards.
