Here is a list of Nepali movies to be screened at a Film Festival in US
Movies about the civil war, women empowerment, refugee crisis, organ trafficking have made it to the list.
The tenth Seattle South Asian Film Festival (SSAFF) is scheduled to kick start on October 15 and movie screenings will be held in five US cities, according to a media report.
Along with movies from Nepal, the largest South Asian Film Festival in the US presented by non-profit, community-based organisation Tasveer, will screen films from like India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.
The festival includes 32 feature films and 27 shorts representing nine countries. Following are Nepali movies that will be screened.
Sunakali
Director: Bhoj Raj Bhat
Sunakali is a documentary about Mugu’s women’s soccer team and its journey to the national championship. The movie shows how girls, through football are able to change the societal perception and has already won accolades.It has an IMDB rating of 9.2/10.
The bayberries have ripened
Director: Niranjan Raj Bhetwal
This movie is set in the suburbs of Nepal during the civil war period, where most men were either abroad or displaced because of the war.
Drawing the Tiger
Directors: Amy Benson, Scott Squire & Ramyata Limbu
Drawing the Tiger was filmed over seven years and is about family whose brightest child is awarded a scholarship to attend school in the city. When she doesn’t return home, the family is forced to survive without her and the opportunity they believed would change their fate.
The Refugees of Shangrila

This movie is about Bhutanese refugees who’ve abandoned their hopes of returning to their lost land and seek a new life in the United States
Hokse
Director: Prasanna Poudyal
This movie is about a town called Hokse, also known as “Kidney Village”, where nearly 75 % of its residents have sold their one kidney for survival. The story follows two individuals who are driven to change the image of the town.
