The Laramie Project on stage
One World Theatre is staging The Laramie Project from February 28 to March 15 at Theater Village, Lazimpat. The Laramie Project is a docudrama by Moises Kaufman and members of the Tectonic Theatre Company. It follows the story of Mathew Shepard, an American student at the University of Wyoming, who was beaten, tortured and left to die on the night of October 6, 1998—all this he went through because he happened to be gay. He died six days later from severe head injuries. Shepard’s death inspired notable films, novels, plays and songs.
The Laramie Project raises many issues and messages in line with core UN purposes of promoting respect for human rights. It also works with the organisations, institutions and individuals that make up the Friends of the Laramie Project. The United Nations in Nepal has promoted this play for educational purposes, believing that it could spark a change in the way people reflect on their social values.
