Shop-talk with Subeksha
Even though Subeksha Khadka was shy in school, she always wanted to participate in the Miss Nepal beauty pageant. You seem to have a busy schedule. What do you like to do whenever you have some time for yourself?
Since I’m doing my bachelors, I’m mostly occupied with the assignments. Other than that, I’ve recently joined Kantipur Television so I’m busy with that as well. But when I do get time, I love hanging out with my friends. I have a small circle of friends and we meet up regularly.
What kind of films do you like to watch?
We are all movie buffs so we often go to the theatres and watch random stuff. The last film we watched together was The Fault in Our Stars. I usually like to watch romantic and horror movies. I like Aamir Khan and try not to miss any of his movies. I’m also a huge fan of Channing Tatum.
Do you also plan to act in the near future?
I’ve only acted in two music videos so far. For the InsideOut band’s song Valentine You and I and Smita Ghimire’s Oh Kati Mitho Maya. I’ve also done a cameo in a film called Aawaran, but that was only a guest appearance. There are many new filmmakers coming up and the Nepali film industry is developing, so I’d definitely like to be a part of it. Also, there are a few offers coming along, but I’d like to work only if the script is good enough. Rather than being part of conventional love stories, I want to do an educative film that has some message in it.
Is there any actor you are looking forward to working with?
I want to work with Dayahang Rai. I watched his latest release, Kabbadi, and liked his performance a lot. I think he is an exceptional actor and I enjoy watching all of his films.
Are you much of a reader?
Yes, I like to read often. I mostly read romantic novels. Other than that, I like to read spiritual and inspirational books. They are interesting and manage to teach you life’s lessons. I like Shiv Khera’s books a lot, and I never get tired of reading them. The last book I read was Lauren Weisberger’s The Devil Wears Prada and it was quite interesting.
Are you a foodie? Do you like to cook?
I always try to control my diet and I want to become more health-conscious, but I always end up eating a lot. I love those momochas you get at Le Trio. I also love the food at Ghangri’s and go there often with my friends. Other than that, I love eating Italian food. And of course, I like eating Nepali food as well. When it comes to cooking, I don’t do that a lot. But I try to help my mum by buying groceries and taking food items home. I do try to cook sometimes and I think I make a very good chicken biryani.
Are you conscious about fashion and brands?
There are always various trends coming up and everybody is so fashionable these days. So yes, I’m quite conscious about fashion and I think one has to be. I love wearing dresses and I buy a lot of them. But I’m not too conscious about brands, as you hardly find original ones here. When it comes to bags, I like Elvi. And when it comes to accessories, I wear minimal but I prefer wearing the original stuff. I also really like the outfits designed by Bishwo Gautam, Subexya Bhadel and Tenzing Tseten Bhutia.
Anything you bought recently and are really fond of?
There are so many things, actually. I hardly go home empty-handed. My mum keeps complaining that I shop a lot. I recently bought a pair of white shoes at Durbar Marg. It’s so comfortable that I keep wearing it often.
Is there anyone you look up to as a source of inspiration?
That’s got to be Sushmita Sen. I like her sense of style, the way she speaks and how she appears in public. I think she is a woman with substance and I admire her a lot.
Any fond memories?
After taking part in Miss Nepal, I got to make very good friends. I, Nagma (Shrestha) and Shristi (Shrestha), we are very close and are more like sisters. We meet regularly and share many things. Shristi is not here right now, but we still chat regularly and are in touch. We are waiting for her to come back. This friendship is something I’ll cherish for my entire life.
Any secret you’d like to share with us?
My friends often say that I ask a lot of questions. I’m always so curious that I can’t help it. And even if I’m quiet sometimes, they are like “why aren’t you asking anything today?” So yes, I also love talking and cracking jokes.
Where do you see yourself 10 years down the line?
I’m planning to complete my studies. I was interested in the business and banking sector earlier so I might get into that as well, but I’m not sure. Since I’ve been working in the media for so long, I’m kind of attached to it and I enjoy it. So even if I am not in the media in the future, I’ll make sure that I contribute in one way or the other. I also enjoy teaching and have done that in the past. My mum runs a school so I might help her out. There are lots of things I want to do, but the future is uncertain and many things come your way, and your plans change accordingly. You never know what’s in store for you!
