Indra Jatra, one of Kathmandu’s major festivals, was marked with a large crowd attending the celebrations on Saturday.
The eight-day event, observed mainly in Kathmandu Valley, Dhulikhel and Dolakha, began on Sunday with the raising of a sacred wooden pole, or lingo, at Basantapur Durbar Square.
The pole, known as Ya Sin in Nepal Bhasa, is transported from a community forest in Suryabinayak, Bhaktapur, and installed outside the palace on the first day as part of the opening rituals.
Highlights included the chariot processions of Ganesh, Bhairav and Kumari, the living goddess.
