Police round up protesters demanding justice for Nirmala Kurmi
They had called off a protest after a three-point agreement with the government in February last year.Post Report
A protest was staged at Maitighar on Friday demanding justice be served in the abduction and murder case of Nirmala Kurmi.
Agitated relatives, and rights activist Rubi Khan, among others, led a demonstration from Kalanki to Maitighar in the Capital protesting against the state authorities taking disciplinary actions against the innocent while acquitting the guilty.
The protesters questioned why the case of Nirmala Kurmi, who had gone missing in 2010, had not been taken to court for so long and demanded that action be taken towards the same.
They accused Superintendent of Police Tul Bahadur Karki and another investigative officer of being involved in framing innocent individuals as guilty and said that strict actions should be taken against them while the innocent should be freed.
Police on Friday rounded up activist Khan and several others as they marched towards the ‘prohibited area’ near Singha Durbar, the central secretariat of the federal government.

In February 2023, women protesters from Banke had staged the third round of their sit-in in Kathmandu for 48 days demanding action against the culprits in the disappearance, abduction and murder of Nirmala Kurmi of Nepalgunj.
They began the protest after the District Police Office, Banke refused to investigate the case even after a witness complaint was filed stating that Kurmi was killed by the accused in the case in order to possess a plot of land that was under the victim’s ownership.
The sit-in was called off after a three-point agreement with the government in February last year, who assured them of proceeding with the case through a thorough investigation and prosecution.
However, the case has still not been brought to a conclusion as it remains unpursued and with no efforts being made to launch an investigation.
