Garbage collection in Kathmandu Valley has been halted for nearly one month now owing to lack of space at Sisdole landfill site.
Nabaraj Dhakal of Kathmandu metropolis said it would take at least a week for garbage collection to resume.
There is currently no space available at Sisdole landfill site in Nuwakot. The road leading to the site also needs repair.
Efforts are underway to repair the road and create space in Sisdole, Dhakal said.
The metropolis has requested all households to limit their waste and manage them for at least a week. Kathmandu alone generates around 500 metric tonnes of waste daily. But the city still does not have proper waste management mechanism in place.
Sisdole landfill was originally leased for two years while the Valley authorities scouted for a site to build a permanent landfill facility.
That was 12 years ago. Yubaraj Khanal, of the Environment Department of Kathmandu Metropolitan City, said the solution to Valley’s waste management problem was building a permanent landfill facility at Bancharedanda, a few kilometres away from Sisdole.
However, works towards that end have not been initiated yet.
