The Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has started distributing compensation to the people whose homes are close to the landfill site at Sisdole in Okharpauwa, Nuwakot. The Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has started distributing compensation to the people whose homes are close to the landfill site at Sisdole in Okharpauwa, Nuwakot.
Rabin Man Shrestha, chief at the Environment Division of KMC, said over 300 families whose homes are up to 900 metres from the site had started receiving compensation from Wednesday.
The KMC had signed an agreement to this end with the representatives of Nuwakot Rural Municipality and Dhading Dhunibesi Municipality a month earlier. The deal was reached after the locals living close to the landfill site obstructed garbage disposal for two weeks, demanding that the facility be shifted to Banchare Danda.
The KMC and the agitating locals worked out a deal to keep the landfill site at the current location until a new facility is built at Banchare Danda. Besides compensating the Sisdole residents, the KMC and the Lalitpur Metropolitan City have also pledged to donate two ambulances for the area.
