The hospital has already signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Chinese government at whose assistance it was built in 2008.
According to the hospital, a technical team from China has already conducted
feasibility assessment and will soon come up with the detailed design before inviting tender for the construction.
At a meeting of the State Affairs Committee (SAC) of Parliament on Friday, Dr Dirgh Raj RC, director of the hospital, informed the lawmakers that every day around 700 patients visit the hospital and the flow of patients is increasing by the day.
“With the current facility, it will be difficult for us handle the pressure,” Dr RC informed the House committee.
According to Dr RC, the number of patients increases to 1,000 per day during rainy season.
“Since budget for the hospital construction has been already allocated by the Chinese side, it might take another two years to complete the construction,” said Dr RC.
The hospital plans to run the to-be-constructed building as its surgical block.
The 130-bed hospital was handed over to Nepal by the Chinese government in 2008. It came into operation in 2009.
As one of the largest government hospitals, the Civil Service Hospital was built initially to serve civil servants who get special privileges of up to 50 percent discount in medical services.
In recent times, the hospital is also running some of the advanced surgical procedures including bone-marrow transplantation to become the first government hospital to provide the service.
Six patients have undergone bone-marrow transplantation at the hospital which began the service 2016.
The hospital is also one of the six hub hospitals of the Ministry of Health and is responsible for the treatment of mass casualties and extends support to other hospitals to cope with emergency situations.
