Panel to study CIAA activities, review authority
The Good Governance and Monitoring Committee of Legislature Parliament has formed a panel to study the activities of the Commission for Investigation of Abuse of Authority. The five-member panel was formed amid allegations that the CIAA has only been catching junior level officials in corruption cases and letting top level officials off the hook.
“The panel will analyse the CIAA’s works, see if they are executed in accordance with the existing laws,” said Sherdhan Rai, the chairperson of the committee. “It
will also review the CIAA’s jurisdiction.”
CIAA has not charged any politicians, nor any high level bureaucrats despite a raft of corruption complaints against them. Subas Nirola, former chief of Nepal Tourism Board, is the only senior official the CIAA has charged with corruption ever since Lokman Singh Karki took the office. Moreover, parliamentary committees are unhappy with Karki after he reportedly turned down their request to explain the reason behind licence termination of various hydropower projects.
