Narayanchaur, Kamalpokhari to undergo major redevelopment
Kathmandu Valley Development Authority (KVDA) has announced that it will give a major facelift to Narayanchaur and Kamal Pokhari starting next fiscal year.
Narayanchaur is an open field located next to Naag Pokhari while Kamal Pokhari, or the Lotus Pond, is a pond near Naxal in Kathmandu.
KVDA expects people to use Narayanchaur and Kamal Pokhari as recreational public parks after the completion of renovation projects in these two places.
KVDA Development Commissioner, Yogeshwor Parajuli, said the project to revamp Narayanchaur and Kamal Pokhari is an initiative taken by the authority to promote greening of the city of Kathmandu.
“It is high time that these places that have been neglected for a long time be renovated considering their historical and ecological importance. After completion of restoration works, these places will be turned into recreational public parks for the residents of the city and will greatly benefit the community residing around them,” said Parajuli.
KVDA has plans to develop Narayanchaur as a park especially meant for elderly people and children to stroll, hangout and play.
“While others can also go to this park for recreational purposes, we have conceptualised Narayanchaur as a park for elderly people and their grand children,” said Parajuli. “We have also plans to equip the place with dense greenery and pavement designed especially for morning and evening walks.”
The park, which will spread over an area of 19 ropanis of land, will also be equipped with rain water harvesting system and fenced to protect it from livestock and street dogs.
Similarly, the park to be constructed around Kamal Pokhari will feature eateries and equipped with benches for visitors to sit and relax.
“We have plans to restore the pond so that lotus flowers, after which the pond is named, will again start to bloom. Then Kamal Pokhari will truly live up to its name,” said Parajuli, adding that the main concept behind revamping 10 ropanis of land and 19 ropanis of pond area in Kamal Pokhari is to make it a place for relaxation and socialisation as well as turning it into a place with spiritual value so that it would be a venue fit for holding religious festivals such as Chhath.
The renovation programmes for Narayanchaur and Kamal Pokhari is going to cost an estimated Rs 20 million, according to Parajuli.
