Koshiyari against proselytism
Visiting Bharatiya Janata Party Vice President Bhagat Singh Koshiyari has expressed concerns over conversion of the Hindu faithful into other religions
“I have been bringing up the topic of religious conversion during my every meeting with Prime Minister Sushil Koirala, Chairman of Maoist party Pushpa Kamal Dahal and other senior leaders,” said Koshiyari in an interaction organised at the Reporters’ Club in Kathmandu on Saturday.
He claimed that some Western countries were promoting proselytism in Nepal ever since the country became secular with the ouster of monarchy in 2008.
The BJP leader, however, rejected the notion of his party trying to turn Nepal back into a Hindu nation.
“Since a majority of Nepali people are Hindu, the people may guess that BJP’s victory in India would influence Nepal’s official religion, but I, for one, do not subscribe to that idea,” Koshiyari said.
He added that the Nepali people have reaffirmed their faith in democracy by voting twice. “You may do anything with your system, we are not interfering.”
Koshiyari also pledged assistance to Nepal in harnessing the country’s water resources to develop hydropower projects and promoting the market of herbs and herbal products.
Kosihyari had arrived in Kathmandu on Friday to attend a function organised by Patanjati Peeth, Nepal.
