Seven batswomen failed to open their account as Nepal were skittled out for a tournament-low 23 in 16.2 overs. Sri Lanka sealed the victory in just 4.3 overs with Hasini Perera clubbing a six and a four in her 14-ball 17. Rubina Chhetri and Saraswati Chaudhary picked up a wicket each for Nepal.
Monday’s total saw Nepal squeezed out for their lowest total in any format of the game. Their previous lowest total in the cricket history was 26 all out in 15.3 overs against Bangladesh during the 2014 Incheon Asian Games when they were chasing Bangladesh’s 107-4.
Opener Jyoti Pandey, who was out in the 12th over, top scored for Nepal with a 39-ball 16 becoming the only player to score in double figures. Opener Sita Rana Magar made four, while skipper Chhetri (one) was the last batswoman to open the account.
Sugandika Kumari (3-7) and Inoka Ranaweera (3-3) shared six wickets for Sri Lanka, while Oshadi Ranasinghe had two scalps. Nepal had opened their tournament campaign with a nine-wicket defeat to another Test-playing side Pakistan on Saturday.
Nepal’s next match pits them against Bangladesh on Tuesday. They will also play India and Thailand in the round-robin league tournament from where the top two teams will play for the title. In another match on Monday, Bangladesh beat Thailand by 35 runs in a low scoring game.
