APF record 2nd win as Bhairahawa bounce back
Nepal Armed Police Force (APF) Club won their second match in a row, while Region No 4 Bhairahawa bounced back in the Women’s National Cricket Tournament with a seven-wicket win.
At the Pulchowk Engineering College grounds, defending champions APF hammered Region No 2 Birgunj by eight wickets in Group ‘A’ and lead the points table with four points. Birgunj were restricted to 79-7 in 40 overs following a tight bowling from a star-studded APF side. The holders reached 80-2 in just 9.5 overs in reply.
APF lost their opener Madhu Thapa (four) with just eight runs on the board before Sita Rana Magar and Jyoti Pandey flayed the Birgunj attack with a 67-run stand for the second wicket. Both scored 31. Pandey was out with APF five shy of victory.
Pandey hit five fours in 24 balls, while Magar’s 28-ball innings included seven boundaries. Subhadra Adhikari and Rojina Aryal took one wicket each for Birgunj.
Earlier, Birgunj were unable to cope with the sharp APF bowling attack. Nisha Giri top scored for them with 24. Opener Mamta Chaulagain (11) and Puja Giri (10) were the only remaining batswomen to make runs in double digits. Binu Budha Magar picked up 2-14 from seven overs for APF.
Bhairahawa had lost to APF in their opening day encounter but looked on course for their first victory after bundling out Baitadi for just 117 in 34 overs. Skipper Indu Berma did the rest with her 45 not out guiding Bhairahawa to 118-3 in 35.1 overs.
Bhairahawa were reduced to 42-3 in 17.1 overs after losing opener Neetu Bhandari, Sadhna Gautam (four) and Seema Thapa (one). Berma then stepped in and forged a 76-run unbroken stand with Melina Thapa to take her team home. Berma hit seven fours in 59 balls and Thapa hit 24 not out. Bhandari made 22. Nisha Bhatta picked up two wickets for Baitadi.
Baitadi had a disastrous start, losing top three batswomen for 13 runs after Berma took two wickets and Seema Thapa one. Anjali Chand and Kabita Kunwar led a strong resistance with a 73 run partnership before the collapse continued with a run out of the former. Baitadi lost their last seven wickets for 31 runs as Sarswoti Pun finished with four-wicket haul. Chand made 35 off 50 while Kunwar scored 26 from 54 balls which included two boundaries.
On Wednesday, Pokhara will take on Baitadi and in Group ‘B’ action, Region No 3 Kathmandu will meet Region No 7 Janakpur.
