The agitating MBBS students of Chitwan Medical College and their guardians issued a joint statement on Sunday giving the college management 24 hours to implement the agreement reached with them earlier.
An agreement was signed between the Medical Education Struggle Committee, formed by the protesting MBBS students, and Guardians Struggle Committee, guardians and the college administration at the District Administration Office on September 12.
According to the agreement, the college would prepare a report on the money they charged MBBS students extra and issue receipts to the students by September 27. They have also agreed to refund the amount by November 4.
Since the college administration failed to meet the deadline, the agitating students and the committee have warned of fresh protests.
The MBBS students have taken to the streets several times in the past few weeks demanding the college refund the extra amount they had been charged. The college is charging them Rs 500,000 to Rs 2 million in charges apart from the government-approved fees, according to the students.
Bowing to the students’ protest and the government’s decision to crackdown on the colleges for charging additional fees, Chitwan Medical College agreed to refund the extra charge. However, the agitating students and their guardians said they were compelled to issue the ultimatum on Sunday as the college administration defied the agreement.
The college is yet to make the report public and hand over receipts to the students. The college administration, however, claimed that they had been working to prepare the report and receipts.
“It may take time. We will soon complete the work and make the report public and hand over the receipts,” said Arun Koirala, an administrator at the college.
