Nepali Congress (NC) Vice-president Ram Chandra Poudel has assured Indian Minister of External Affairs Sushma Swaraj and Home Minister Rajnath Singh that his party is collaborating with ruling parties to resolve the Tarai crisis.
“They (Indian ministers) assured that India was aware about the problems facing Nepal and difficulties in the supply of essential commodities and expressed their commitment to solve the issue,” Poudel told the Post after his meetings with the Indian ministers in New Delhi on Wednesday. He said Swaraj expressed her concerns about the constitution amendment bill proposed by the NC.
“During the meeting I assured them that the political task force will address the demands of Madhes and constitution amendment process will also be completed soon,” he said. The NC leader said that he informed the ministers that his party was collaborating and working as per the political agreement with Indian leaders to address the demands of Madhes. He informed them that the constitution amendment process would come to a close in a few days.
“Protests at the no-man’s-land are inappropriate, we are striving to address the demands of Madhes,” Poudel told Swaraj, “I have requested for India’s active initiation to ease the supplies into Nepal ending border obstructions.”
He that Foreign Minister Kamal Thapa gave “false and unnecessary” assurance to the Indian authority regarding the constitution amendment. “I informed the ministers about the difficulties surrounding Nepal-India ties and problems that have surfaced in the past few months due to the blockade,” he said.
Swaraj reminded Poudel about Thapa’s commitment to ease the situation by solving Nepal’s internal political problem after amendments in the constitution.
Earlier, NC leader Poudel met Yoga guru Baba Ramdev at Patanjali Yogpeeth in Haridwar. During the visit, Ramdev said the ongoing blockade at Nepal-India border was a matter of great concern, adding that he had urged Indian PM Narendra Modi, among other top leaders, to bring an early end to the blockade.
