President Ramchandra Paudel attended the Ghode Jatra celebrations organised by the Nepal Army at Tundikhel on Saturday. The event, held in celebration of Ghode Jatra 2025, was also graced by Vice President Ramsahay Prasad Yadav, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, Speaker Devraj Ghimire, National Assembly Chair Narayan Dahal, Chief Justice Prakashman Singh Raut, as well as several other senior government officials and heads of diplomatic missions.

During the ceremony, President Paudel witnessed a variety of equestrian performances by the Nepal Army, including horse races and jumping displays. The programme also featured demonstrations of horses performing tasks such as transport, farming, hunting, and military activities, showcasing their historical and cultural significance. Additionally, dog performances were part of the celebrations, and awards were presented to those who excelled in the displays.
The Ghode Jatra is celebrated annually in the Kathmandu Valley on Chaitra Krishna Aunsi, the no moon day in Chaitra.
According to legend, the festival commemorates the defeat of the demon 'Gurumapa,' who terrorised the city by preying on children. To prevent his spirit from causing further harm, the people of the valley have since held Ghode Jatra, symbolically stamping out the demon’s soul with the sound of horses' hooves. As part of the tradition, food is also offered at the tree where Gurumapa’s spirit is believed to reside, ensuring the safety of children.
