Nepali Congress lawmaker Tek Bahadur Gurung, an accused in a corruption case that is sub-judice at the Special Court, has been suspended from the post.
The Federal Parliament secretariat, issuing a notice on Tuesday, informed that as per the constitutional provision, Gurung will remain suspended from the post until he is acquitted from the court. The verdict will determine his return to or his dismissal from the post.
The notice issued by Bharatraj Gautam, general secretary at the federal parliament secretariat, has referred to a letter that it had received from the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority on December 23. Earlier in the day, the anti-graft body had decided to send the letter to the concerned agency to implement the legal provision for automatic suspension of lawmaker Gurung’s post until the case at the special court is settled. The secretariat had received the letter the same day, according to the notice.
Despite automatic suspension as per the law, Gurung participated in the swearing-in ceremony of the lawmakers at the Federal Parliament on December 23.
Gurung is accused of corruption while renting the land of Kathmandu Funpark while he was the minister of state for labour and employment in the Sushil Koirala-led government.
The CIAA had filed corruption charges against 16 people including Gurung at the Special Court in 2019.
