‘Relocate villages threatened by landslides’

District Disaster Management Committee, Lamjung, has recommended the National Reconstruction Authority to immediately relocate three settlements that are at high landslide risk areas.
The committed has recommended relocating 22 families of Upper Chipla of Marsyangdi Rural Municipality-5, 33 families of Bhonje in Kolasothar Rural Municipality-7 and 12 families of Tallo Majhkharka in Dordi Rural Municipality-7 to safer locations before the start of this year’s monsoon.
The three settlements were exposed to landslide threat as a result of the 2015 earthquake.If these settlements are not relocated immediately, there could be a great loss of lives and properties, according to Chief District Officer Jhankanath Dhakal. Earlier, the Ministry of Federal Affairs and Local Development and the NRA’s Central Project Implementation Unit had also recommended the government to relocate these settlements. CDO Dhakal said he had urged the NRA Chief Executive Officer Yubaraj Bhusal to take steps to evacuate Upper Chipla, Bhonje and Tallo Majhkarka before disaster strikes.
Meanwhile, the District Administration Office (DAO) has formed a committee for disaster management in view of the approaching monsoon season. The committee, led by Assistant CDO Kajiman Sunar, is planning to install retaining walls and other safety infrastructures to prevent landslides. The DAO has also instructed the security agencies to remain at high alert for emergency rescue and relief works.
