Legislature-Parliament Speaker Subash Chandra Nembang and Deputy Speaker Onsari Gharti resigned from their respective posts on Wednesday.

The resignation by both Nembang and Gharti has cleared the path for the elections to the both posts.

The new constitution has a provision for conducting an election to both the posts within 20 days of its promulgation.

The process for the appointment of new speaker will begin today itself.

Parliament secretariat informed that the candidacy for posts will be filed by Thursday and the election will be conducted on Friday.

UCPN (Maoist) is the front-runner for the post of the speaker while Rastriya Prajatantra Party-Nepal is likely to get the deputy speaker's post.

CPN-UML had offered speaker's post to UCPN (Maoist) after the latter gave up their claim for president.
