‘WFP supplied rice knowing it was rotten’
The WFP had distributed substandard rice even after the local politicians and the officials from the Agriculture Ministry notified them about the quality of the rice.
The report released by the sub-committee, led by CPN-UML lawmaker Bhanu Bhakta Dhakal, has claimed that the WFP officials distributed rotten rice in Majuwa Deurali village, telling the quake victims that the rice was “good enough” for consumption.
Meanwhile, Iolanda Jaquemet, communication officer at WFP, has said the monitoring team had told them that the rice was not
of the ‘higher’ quality, but of the ‘standard’ quality. “To which the WFP representatives answered the quality of rice satisfied the requirements of the Government but at no point did they state that ‘it is good enough for Gorkha’,” she said.
The report of the sub-committee under UML lawmaker Dhakal also mentions that
120 out of 457 bags of rice stored in a temporary shelter in Laprak VDC in Gorkha were spoilt.
The UN food agency, in a statement on Wednesday, had confirmed that 120 of the 485 bags of rice delivered to Laprak VDC had gone bad, and none of the rejected rice was distributed.
In a similar case,
another parliamentary sub-committee under
Nepali Congress lawmaker Sanjaya Gautam found that 541 metric tonnes of pulses kept at the WFP warehouse at Khajura in Banke district were found to be unfit for consumption.
The sub-commitee has submitted its report to Constituent Assembly Chairman Subas Nembang, demanding stern action against the individuals involved in distribution of substandard food to the earthquake victims.
The WFP representatives have said that the rejected goods were kept in the warehouse in Banke but they have no intention to distribute them.
