Average wholesale prices of vegetables dropped up to 24 percent due to an adequate supply of seasonal produce. Prices of vegetables such as tomato small, potato red and white, onion, cabbage, green peas and broccoli are down.
Traders attributed the decline in prices to sufficient production and supply of seasonal vegetables. According to Binay Shrestha, deputy general manager at the Kalimati Fruits and Vegetables Development Board Committee, regular shipments of seasonal vegetables from adjoining districts sent prices tumbling in the market.
Prices of potato red and white have decreased 6.25 and 24.15 percent respectively. Potato red cost Rs30 per kg on Monday while potato white cost Rs22 per kg. Similarly, potato prices are expected to fall due to the arrival of local harvests in the market and competition from Indian products. The price of tomato small has remained constant at Rs42 per kg.
Prices of vegetables such as tomato big and cauliflower local and Tarai have increased. Tomato big which cost Rs14 per kg a week ago now sells for Rs25 per kg. Shrestha said that falling temperatures had impacted production and sent prices soaring. A drop in the production of cauliflower in recent days has pushed up the price, he said. Cauliflower local costs Rs38 per kg and cauliflower Tarai costs Rs33 per kg.
The Kalimati Fruits and Vegetables Development Board Committee receives 700-750 tonnes of vegetables daily. The vegetables sold in the Kathmandu Valley come from Palung, Kavre, Makwanpur, Dhading, Chitwan and Bhaktapur districts.
