The Department of Supply Management and Protection of Customers (DSMPC) is planning to inspect the highway side eateries to curb food adulteration.   

Inspection teams would start visiting the hotels, restaurants and eateries along the highways from next week, said Yogendra Gauchan, director general of the department.

He added that the voluntary inspection teams will include representatives from the departments, police, hotel entrepreneurs and civil society.

The department will also be coordinating with respective District Administration Offices and consumer rights activists in the task.

“The government has already provided green and yellow stickers to the eateries and hotels along the highway after carrying inspection. The teams will start their work by inspecting theses establishments,” Gauchan said.  

Many highway side hotels and eateries have been found serving unhygienic food for high prices to their customers, particularly during festival season.

The department hopes to discourage such unethical business practice by carrying out hygiene inspection.

It has also urged the public to use their judgment when eating during their journey and also look for the green sticker of the department.

The green sticker means the place is clean and hygienic, while the yellow denotes low level of hygiene.  

“We request passengers to look for the green sticker before they get into any eatery or hotel on the highway. Our monitor team will re-examine the stickers and also will monitor whether they have placed the stickers given by the government,” said Gauchan.
