Chitwan National Park (CNP) welcomed its second calf in a week when a wild water buffalo (Bubalus arnee), also called Asiatic buffalo, delivered on Thursday, park officials said on Friday.

CNP Senior Veterinary Doctor Kamal Ghaire, the buffalo delivered a male calf in a conserved location on the eastern belt of the park in Padampur.

Last week, another water buffalo, relocated to the park two years ago gave birth to a female calf on August 16.

“Following the two-day long monitoring with the support from elephants, we found the second wild water buffalo giving birth to a baby calf,” said Ghaire narrated.

One more water buffalo is in the family way and she is due for delivery within a month, the doctor said.

Director General of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation Department Man Bahadur Khadka said the addition of new members to the endangered water buffalo species here is a huge success of conservation efforts.

After the births of two calves, the number of wild water buffaloes in CNP has increased to eleven.

Prior to this, six Arna succumbed to diseases and tiger attacks, officials said.
