Kavresthali is a beautiful ‘Kath’ or suburb, located in the outskirts of Kathmandu. Just five kilometres away from the polluted and perennially crowded Balaju, this little settlement is scenic and serene. Uncontaminated by frenzy of a life in the city, Kavresthali has its own easy charms. Unlike Kathmandu, the residents here can be seen engrossed in a simpler lifestyle–the kids turning the green fields into playgrounds, chasing the wind under the sky, and the adults either cleaning and collecting manure for fertilisers or milking animals. Some can be seen carrying milk containers to the bazaar for income, while others can be found ploughing their fields.
Kavresthali is so close to Kathmandu and yet so different when it comes to the way of life. But that is the story of Kathmandu’s many ‘Kaths’, close enough for the residents to commute to the city for work or school, but far enough that it feels like a world of its own—at least for now.
