The meeting was postponed for the third consecutive day without entering into regular business and was postponed immediately after lawmakers from the UML and three small parties obstructed the house proceedings. They have been objecting to the constitution amendment bill registered by the government.
Soon after Sunday’s session began, the opposition MPs stood up at their respective seats, barring the meeting from taking its due course.
Following the protest, Speaker Onasari Gharti let Anuradha Thapa Magar of Nepal Majdoor Kisan Party speak. Thapa Magar charged that the constitution was being amended at the behest of India, which she said has put the country’s sovereignty at risk. She claimed that parties in Nepal were uniting and splitting at the behest of foreign forces.
Objecting to her statement, Sushil Kumar Shrestha of the Rastriya Prajatantra Party said no foreign element was behind the recent unification of the two RPPs.
Other RPP MPs joined the protest, prompting the Speaker to direct the Parliament Secretariat to edit out the statement.
After the Speaker’s request for allowing the parliamentary business was unheeded, she postponed the meeting until Wednesday.
