The protest was part of a Kathmandu-centric agitation led by Sanghiya Gathabandhan, an alliance of fringe Tarai and indigenous parties. Protesters chanted slogans against the government for not addressing their concerns through constitutional amendment. Most of the placards displayed during the parade demanded separate provinces for Magar, Gurung, Tamang, Limbu and other ethnic groups. Sanghiya Samajbadi Forum Nepal Chairman Upendra Yadav, leaders Ashok Rai and Rajendra Shrestha, and Madhesi leaders Laxman Lal Karna, Mahendra Raya Yadav and Raj Kishore Yadav were among those who led the rally. SSFN General Secretary Shrestha said they would continue with their protests until all their demands are met.
“The participation was encouraging. We expect the number of protesters to grow in the coming days,” said Shrestha.
