Nepal reports 4,961 cases as rapid antigen tests added to daily infection tallies

Nepal on Sunday reported 4,534 new PCR confirmed coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours taking the nationwide infection tally to 853,738.
Similarly, 427 people tested positive in a total of 2,569 antigen tests, according to the Health Ministry.
As of Sunday, 5,004,234 PCR and 887,595 antigen tests have been carried out across the country.
A total of 12,562 PCR tests were performed in the past 24 hours, according to the Health Ministry.
In its regular situation report, the ministry did not mention the death toll over the past 24 hours. It, however, reported three Covid-19-related fatalities.
The countrywide death toll has now reached 11,620. The number of active cases stands at 25,680 and the rate of infection positivity is 36.09 percent.
According to the World Health Organization, if the positivity rate, or the number of tests that return positive for every 100 tests, is more than 5 percent, the pandemic is supposed to be beyond control.
According to the ministry, 816,438 infected people have recovered from the disease so far; 435 of them in the last 24 hours.
Nepal, on January 7, had reported 24 new Omicron cases. Earlier in December, three Omicron cases were confirmed.
The Health Ministry said tests conducted on 250 samples from among the 1,146 infected in the Nepali month of Poush had shown S-gene dropouts. Gene-sequencing performed on 24 samples returned Omicron results in all of them.
Kathmandu Valley recorded 3,347 new infections in the past 24 hours. Of these, 2,545 cases were confirmed in Kathmandu, 474 in Lalitpur and 328 in Bhaktapur.
In the past 24 hours, 338 new infections were recorded in Province 1, 113 in Province 2, 3,609 in Bagmati, 237 in Gandaki, 197 in Lumbini, 11 in Karnali and 27 in Sudurpaschim.
On Sunday, 122 individuals infected with the virus were being treated in intensive care units across the country. Another 29—five in Province 1, 17 in Bagmati, three in Gandaki and two each in Lumbini and Sudurpaschim—were on ventilator support.
Nepal on Saturday reported 3,703 new PCR confirmed coronavirus cases and four deaths. Similarly, 4,204 new PCR confirmed coronavirus cases and three deaths were reported on Friday and 2,922 new PCR confirmed coronavirus cases and one death were recorded on Thursday.
